Get Backlinks To Your Website
Backlinks are such a huge subject that you could dedicate an entire site to them. They come in several forms: easy, hard and impossible to get.
Easy backlinks come from sites where you are a member, such as FaceBook, CafePress, Amazon and LinkedIn; sites where you (mostly) have control of the content, like Squidoo and Hub Pages; and sites which YOU own, and therefore have full control over! Owning a portfolio of sites with similar subjects is a good strategy, so you can cross-link between them at will.
Hard backlinks to get include sites within your niche which are more or less in competition with you. They won't easily link to your site. Writing an article for them in return for the backlink can sometimes work very well, though don't be surprised if competing sites don't even bother to respond to link requests.
Impossible backlinks: the leader in your niche is very, very unlikely to pass on the fruits of their hard work to you. The upside of this is that, if you're doing a great job and they have a way for their members to share content (such as a forum), somebody may choose to link to you from your competitor. It's a long shot and probably not worth trying to instigate, as this tactic may well backfire on you. Let it happen naturally.
Buying backlinks is always tempting, but Google has apparently cracked down on this practice and I do not recommend it.
